Preview: Ice Hockey World Cup 2010: Germany v USA
This year’s Hockey World Cup takes place in Germany, where 16 nations will compete for the title. The competition begins with four groups of four teams and after all 56 games are played only one nation’s team will be left, the champions.
The hosts, Germany, are going to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the opening match between the home side and USA is played in Gelsenkirchen with 75, 000 fans watching.
Group D
Germany – USA
Many of the silver medalists from the Olympic Games have refused to participate in the World Cup and so we will see a lot of new players in the USA national team this year. Forwards such as Okposo, Dubinsky or goalie Clemmensen are the young talents that the visitors will count on here in Germany. And so it is expected that the USA will not end their 50 years of waiting for World Cup gold medals.
The Germans, on the other hand, are both excited and motivated as they have all their experienced players available this year. The 12th IIHF team will also count on the great home crowd to be their extra player on their quest for a 5th medal from the World Cup. However they might find it difficult to get into the top 8 as they do not have that much quality in their team. By contrast, the USA have great potential in their young and talented players and we expect this will be the decisive factor in the opening match.
