One down and two to go. Having wrapped up their 22nd German league championship, Bayern München are now gunning for the top prize in the DFB Cup and the Champions League as well.

"This can become an historic season, but we need to stay focussed and concentrate on the task in hand", skipper Mark van Bommel has warned. "Each and every player wants to win the game in Berlin, and the Champions League even more so", coach Louis van Gaal surmised ahead of the two finals which round off FC Bayern's season.

First up this Saturday (May 15th) in the capital are Werder Bremen. A week later, the new German champions go head-to-head with Inter Milan for European club football's top prize. Looking at the bigger picture, a victory for Bayern here could also definitively secure Germany third place ahead of Italy in UEFA's five-year national rankings. That in turn would entitle the Bundesliga to a fourth starting slot in the Champions League from 2011-12 onwards.

It's not only in Munich however that they are celebrating a job well done this season. There are plenty of grounds for satisfaction at Schalke 04 too. Felix Magath has guided the club to unanticipated success despite its financially precarious situation. They may have missed out once again on a first German title since the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963, but as runners-up the Royal Blues have earned an automatic place in the group stages of the next Champions League.

"We've really had a great season", Magath said in the wake of the final league match, a 0-0 draw at Mainz, adding with a grin that, "now we can all start to do our sums and dig around for the money to bring in new players."

The other team looking to make their mark on the Champions League will be Werder Bremen. As third-place finishers in the Bundesliga, they will have to come through the tournament's qualifying stages. "We've achieved a goal that seemed very far away just a few weeks ago", coach Thomas Schaaf said: "What makes it all the more remarkable is that the team always believed they could do it. It's only because of that, that they were able to finish so strongly. We'd set ourselves the target of a place in Europe and now, by way of the qualifying rounds, we have the chance of achieving the optimal outcome."

On matchday 20 Bremen were sixth in the table, 13 points adrift of third place. From then on, they lost just one of their final 14 games. In short, the men from the far north are unlikely to be travelling to the DFB Cup final with any feelings of inferiority. And as holders of the trophy they won in Berlin last year, why should they?
