English Carling Cup Previews: Round 2
The Premier League clubs, minus the big guns competing in Europe, enter the Carling Cup this week and it looks like some of the top-flight sides could be in trouble.
West Brom got their first win since promotion back to the big-time against Sunderland on Saturday but the Baggies could struggle to build on that success when they travel to Leyton Orient on Tuesday night. The O's haven't been pulling up any trees in League One so far this season but a 1-1 draw at Southampton got them off the mark and manager Russell Slade will be hoping that his side can build on that point. The Baggies made nine changes for their opening match in this competition during the previous campaign, a 4-3 extra-time success over League Two Rotherham, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Roberto Di Matteo do the same again. A plethora of squad players can therefore expect to start at Brisbane Road and that could give the O's the chance to take advantage of a much-changed outfit. Orient took Stoke to extra-time at this stage of last season's Carling Cup so they definitely won't be scared of Premier League opposition and the quality of Matt Spring and Stephen Dawson means they can stand toe-to-toe with West Brom in the midfield battle. The hosts look capable of becoming one of the lower league sides to make national headlines this week and the 5.50 on offer for a home win is worth some support. Success for Norwich at Blackburn wouldn't shock the world of football but it would be a notable scalp for Paul Lambert's rapidly-improving Canaries. Last season's League One champions have won three games on the spin after their disappointing 3-2 defeat against Watford in front of the Sky cameras on the opening weekend of the new campaign. New signings John Ruddy, Andrew Surman and Andrew Crofts are starting to get settled in the first XI and their side looks set to be among the play-off campaign. Goalkeeper Ruddy could prove to be a key man in Tuesday night's clash and Lambert has been full of praise for his displays in the victories against Swansea and Scunthorpe in Norwich's previous two matches. Blackburn reached the Carling Cup semi-finals last term and boss Sam Allardyce will be confident that Rovers can make a big impact over the coming months as takeover talk continues to dominate the news agenda at Ewood Park. However, it isn't all good news with no big-name signings arriving at the club this summer and Allardyce is already bemoaning his lack of forward options as we near the end of the summer transfer window. Rovers made seven changes for their first match in last season's competition and the same approach this time out would result in some untried youngsters getting their chance to shine. It is 5.50 for Norwich to win in Lancashire and their upward momentum should give them the confidence to claim the spoils from their journey north. Another surprise is on the cards when Premier League new boys Blackpool travel to MK Dons. Bloomfield Road hosts Premier League football for the first time next weekend when the Seasiders face Fulham and there is no doubt that game is where the focus of the town is currently fixed. Some of the euphoria at the club has been removed by Saturday's 6-0 defeat at Arsenal and the trip to stadium:mk will not figure too high on the radar of fans desperate to bask in the glow of life at the top table of English football. The problems surrounding Ian Holloway's summer recruitment drive have been well documented over recent weeks and the resignation of chairman Karl Oyston last week added to the worries at Bloomfield Road. Holloway still needs new faces to strengthen his squad and his reserves don't look like they have the quality to make a major impression in this match or over the course of the campaign. New MK Dons boss Karl Robinson has been canny in his transfer activity over the summer and the acquisition of former Liverpool midfielder Didier Hamann should give his side the quality to make an impact in League Two. Jermaine Easter and Sam Baldock will provide a threat in attack so take Ladbrokes' 3.10 for a Dons win as they look to take advantage of a Blackpool side with their focus elsewhere. PICKS:
