Champions League: Round 1 (Tuesday)
Manchester United failed to kill off Everton in the Premier League on Saturday when they were in the ascendency and another vital two points were squandered.
It was the second time this season that Sir Alex Ferguson has seen his side let a winning position slip and a third time in quick succession would be almost unthinkable as they prepare to face Rangers in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night. The late jitters against the Toffees and also Fulham have been away from home but at Old Trafford they boast a perfect record to date with six goals scored and none conceded against Newcastle and West Ham. Bar the injured Michael Carrick, Fergie has a full squad to pick from which means a possible return for Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the defence and almost certainly a place for Wayne Rooney up front. Saved the potential public flaying from the Everton crowd or perhaps punishment for his recent alleged off-field activities, it would be no surprise to see him rise to the occasion in the right way on another big European night. Rangers scrambled a late win over Hamilton in the SPL over the weekend and goal hero Kenny Miller has admitted they will have to raise their game significantly if they are to get within a country mile of the hosts. Miller does have some previous at Old Trafford having notched a winner for Wolves in the Premier League seven years ago in a shock 1-0 scoreline but getting anywhere near that outcome for his current employers is going to be tremendously difficult considering Rangers have not won any of their last 10 Champions League outings. A victory for the home side to nil is at 1.61 so in a bid to boost that we shall put them in a double with 2.15 Werder Bremen when they host Tottenham. This will be a first venture into Europe for Spurs for 48 years and the excitement almost got the better of them against Young Boys in the qualifying round. They have played some attractive football this season but have also been guilty of some below-par spells during games which has hampered momentum in the early weeks of the campaign. And any periods where they drift off the pace are likely to be punished by the Germans. A 0-0 draw at Bayern Munich over the weekend may not seem the greatest cause for encouragement on the face of it, but they played some fantastic football and are certainly moving in the right direction after a shock 4-1 Bundesliga loss to Hoffenheim on the first day of the season. They go about business with a confident approach and Saturday's result at Bayern should herald further progress. They certainly hold the edge in experience at this level and are fancied to get off to a winning start - so we will be cheering them on along with Red Devils.
Suggestion: Manchester United to win to nil + Werder to beat Tottenham, combo at 3.46 at Bet365
