English Npower Championship Preview: Week 7

QPR appear to be cruising at the top of the Championship but they wouldn't be the first team to take a tumble on the back of a near-perfect performance and now they could be worth opposing for the trip to Leicester on Saturday.

The R's ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Ipswich in midweek and few would doubt they have what it takes to win promotion under the expert guidance of Neil Warnock, but it's prices that dictate our involvement and a couple of layers seem to be writing off the Foxes a little too readily at 2.75.

It's been a frustrating start to the season for Paulo Sousa as he tries to get his own philosophy across to a new group of players at the Walkers but something clicked in the second half against Cardiff on Tuesday and Leicester will take some stopping if they recreate the same vibe against the Londoners.

The Portuguese coach has set his new team up in the same 4-2-3-1 system that served him so well for long periods at Swansea last term, but it's a formation that requires midfielders to be bold and adventurous from deep areas and this is what appears to have taken time to sink in.

However, wide man Andy King took greater responsibility to bag both goals in the second-half turnaround against the Bluebirds and we should expect to see the Foxes perform with much greater purpose on the back of that blueprint.

Ball retention will be key because Rangers are bang in form and full of confidence, but they struggled when we opposed them in similar circumstances at nearby Derby three weeks ago.

The early pacesetters denied us with a late double salvo to rescue a point at Pride Park on that occasion but we're confident Leicester possess greater resilience to see the job through if they get their noses in front.

Meanwhile, Preston came up short against Nottingham Forest in midweek but we're prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt because they look over-priced once again for the visit of Norwich.

The Lilywhites were looking good value to land the spoils going into the final quarter against Billy Davies' men but they were picked off by a couple of Lewis McGugan strikes.

It was a result that piles the pressure on manager Darren Ferguson but we expect his players to come out fighting and they can capitalise on home advantage - with a bumper crowd expected at reduced ticket prices - to expose a possible lack of resilience in the Norwich midfield.

The Canaries were well beaten at Doncaster in midweek and though Preston aren't in the same class as Sean O'Driscoll's men, they do have an aura of authority on home soil and that should be enough to see them through.

Finally, take some of the near 4.33 quotes on Watford winning on the road for the second time in the space of a few days when they travel to Millwall.

The Hornets did us proud with a convincing win at Bristol City in midweek and while a trip to the New Den represents an altogether more daunting proposition, we reckon Malky Mackay's men possess the firepower to plunder the points without having to dominate.

The Lions have been excellent to date but their game is built on spades of grit and determination and now they might reach a point when a flurry of games in quick succession takes its toll and they struggle to impose the physical aspects of their play with quite so much rigour.

Doncaster v Leeds
Simon Grayson has promised to ring the changes for Leeds' second trip to south Yorkshire in the space a few days following their alarming second-half collapse against Barnsley on Tuesday.

The Whites appeared to be stretching their positive early season form when taking the lead at Oakwell but conceded an equaliser on the stroke of half-time and were then taken apart by a further four goals after the interval.

Grayson was understandably furious with what he saw as a bad day at the office but the general consensus among fans is that this was an accident waiting to happen. Leeds' good start had rewarded some neat attacking play but, in doing so, it papered over the cracks of an extremely flaky back four.

So now they will need to tighten up, and quickly, because you suspect forthcoming opponents will take heed of what reaped such huge rewards for Mark Robins' men and target those same weaknesses.

As such, you would expect some support for Doncaster in the build-up to this game and it seems unlikely the hosts will go off as big as the 2.30 currently on offer.

However, for all their quality as a collective, Donny aren't not the most direct of teams and sometimes lack the spark to open up a game when the onus is entirely on them to do so. Combine this with the possibility of a Leeds backlash performance with a heightened sense of focus guaranteed and it all points towards a 'no bet'.

Hull v Nottingham Forest
Jimmy Bullard was a surprise inclusion on the Hull teamsheet against Derby in midweek and the Tigers responded by grabbing their first win since the opening day, so naturally the temptation is there to crown it as a turning point in the season.

It had become apparent that Nigel Pearson was lacking quality in his midfield, so it was probably only a matter of time before he invited Bullard in from the cold after the August transfer window passed without any interest in the club's highest earner.

Bullard, of course, has the capacity to dictate the tempo and control games at this level and although he might be lacking match fitness at the moment, he will view the presence of the television cameras as an opportunity to put himself back in the spotlight.

As such, he might be worth a small speculative punt to score the first goal at double-figure prices, assuming he will be on free-kicks and penalties, although we'll stop short of actually putting it up as a recommendation.

Forest also scored a landmark victory of their own on Tuesday as they registered their first away triumph since January when coming from behind to beat Preston at Deepdale, but things would have to improve behind the scenes before we considered punting the Reds at current prices.
