English Npower League 2 Preview: Week 7
Gary Waddock makes his first return to Aldershot on Saturday since he left the club in October last year to take charge of Wycombe.
The Chairboys were then in League One but they have now slipped back to the bottom tier of the Football League and are level on seven points in the standings with the Shots. Last weekend's 2-1 defeat at home to Macclesfield was a major disappointment for Wycombe and midfielder Gareth Ainsworth can understand why the fans felt like booing. "They have the right to boo the team when they want and not one of the players can say we didn't deserve to be booed because we lost the game," he said. "Hopefully we can turn them into cheers next week. The lads are really, really gutted and it is probably the worst feeling we have had this season so far." Wanderers are without a win since the 2-1 success over bottom-of-the-table Morecambe on the opening day of the campaign and find themselves with a gap to the early pacesetters. They should still be in the mix for at least a play-off spot as the table starts to take shape but this is not the start that Waddock would have wanted ahead of his EBB Stadium return. He enjoyed a fantastic spell in charge of the Hampshire outfit as he led them out of the Conference and into the Football League. The 48-year-old says he isn't sure of the reception he can expect this weekend from the Aldershot fans but he knows that their side will provide a tough test. "Aldershot have got a very good team there," he told BBC Surrey this week. "They will be looking to go one step further than last year when they reached the play-offs." The Shots have, like Wycombe, failed to sparkle at the start of the campaign but they are very tough to beat at home and Marvin Morgan in attack can cause problems for any side in this division. There is plenty to like about their first XI with Glen Little's arrival in the summer helping add a bit of extra quality to the midfield and they also have a decent defence that should stay solid during the campaign. The Aldershot fans will make it a cracking atmosphere for Waddock's return and that will ensure the hosts are up for the challenge. Take the 2.30 on offer with bet365 for an Aldershot win.
