English Npower League 1 Preview: Week 9 (mid week)
Reading between the lines of results in League One so far this season, it already seems apparent that Charlton will struggle to emulate their top-six finish last term and MK Dons look decent value to triumph at The Valley on Tuesday.
The Addicks were held by newly-promoted Dagenham & Redbridge in their own backyard on Saturday, compounding the damage already done to confidence by disappointing results against Oldham and Exeter, and now the Dons can make light of their own tough start by comparison. Karl Robinson won't be too chuffed to have come away from trips to Carlisle, Brighton and Peterborough with zero points but victory at a ground where his troops suffered a 5-1 defeat last season would suddenly paint a rosier picture of their away record overall. On home soil, MK have encountered few problems, beating Swindon and Southampton on the way to collecting ten points from a possible 12, and though this might be classed as a tough fixture based on reputation, we think the visitors might be surprised at how standards have dropped in SE7. The Buckinghamshire side are an honest bunch who should push the top six close once again, although we're not totally convinced they possess the mentality to dictate terms from the first whistle. Much will depend on their self-belief but the price is big enough for us to take a small leap of faith in the visitors. Betsson's 3.75 quote appears to suggest that little, if anything, has changed from last season but we'd dispute that based on how Charlton clearly deteriorated as the campaign progressed and they've since lost Nicky Bailey, Lloyd Sam and Jonjo Shelvey. As for Milton Keynes, it might be pretty much the same team that finished eight places adrift of their hosts but their continuity combined with the fresh approach of Robinson, John Gorman and Didi Hamann gives them the capacity to improve. PICK:
MK Dons to beat Charlton at 3.75 at Betsson.
