Champions League: Round 3 (Tuesday)
Chelsea return to the scene of their 2008 Champions League final defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday when they face Spartak Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium.
And we're predicting more heartache for the Blues as the Russians look a decent bet at odds of 14/5. Chelsea have to play on the FieldTurf surface this time, and they'll take to the plastic pitch without Didier Drogba who is too ill to travel to Moscow. Though they managed well enough without him in their first two Champions League games (when he was suspended), this is arguably their toughest test in the group. Spartak Moscow have won both of their opening games in Group F too, winning away at Marseille before brushing aside Zilina 3-0. Alania Vladikavkaz lost by the same scoreline to Spartak in the Russian Premier League last Friday, and, with a day's extra recovery time, they could be sharper in the early stages than travel-weary Chelsea. Chelsea have lost and drawn their last two games on the road in the Premier League, so they are vulnerable away from home at present. With Alex, Yossi Benayoun, Didier Drogba and possibly Frank Lampard missing they look worth taking on and Spartak are the bet at 3.50. Over in Group H Arsenal take on Shakhtar Donetsk, and while the Gunners are pretty formidale at home in Europe these days I can't help but think the 1.60 is a bit too short. The Ukrainians shouldn't be underestimated as they are unbeaten, like Arsenal, after two Champions League games and they warmed up for this with an easy 2-0 win at Metalurh on Friday. However, while we wouldn't be rushing in to back the Gunners at 1.60, they should create enough chances to eventually win the game. Their problem is at the back where they continue to give away goals and though Shakhtar will have to settle for second best in terms of possession they are more than capable when they get the ball. With that in mind, I think they've been underestimated in the goalscorer makets where Luiz Adriano is priced up at 3.75 to score anytime. He's scored 11 goals this season, including two in the Champions League, and looks a decent bet to make it three from three in Group H. PICKS:
