English Npower League 1 Preview: Week 13
The entertainment value has gone through the roof at London Road this season where Peterborough play a ritual game of see-saw, using their embarrassment of attacking riches to eradicate the shortcomings of a porous defence.
It's a game that has seen them come from two goals down to take the spoils against Huddersfield and Oldham, although they came up short when gifting a similar advantage to Notts County, but the icing on the cake was last weekend's 5-4 humdinger against Swindon. However, things are slightly different on the road and Gary Johnson's men are crying out to be opposed for the trip to Brentford on Saturday. The Bees are 2.75 to triumph on home soil and that's too good to resist in light of Posh defeats at Bournemouth, Tranmere and Hartlepool already this term. The Londoners haven't been the most consistent outfit around this season - as defeats at home to Walsall, Rochdale and Oldham would testify - but they tend to have more joy when roughing up the bigger teams and this particular challenge should be right up their street. Andy Scott's men are responsive rather than pro-active and it's an approach that brought them great rewards in front of their own fans last season as they avoided defeat in all but one of eight matches against teams who finished above them in the table. And the trend of never having lost a home league game as outsiders in nearly three years under Scott has continued with well-deserved victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton already this term, not to mention their Carling Cup penalty shoot-out success over Everton. So the visit of second-placed Posh should hold no fears and there's more than enough question marks about the discipline of the visitors to justify taking the big price. Meanwhile, the match between Plymouth and Huddersfield at Home Park is similar in many ways, meaning it could pay to get with the hosts at 3.00. We won't dispute that the Terriers have the better all-round credentials of the two teams but an all-or-nothing return of three wins and three defeats on the road leaves the door ajar just enough for us to speculate as we investigate. Indeed, you have to trawl back eight months and 19 matches for the last time Lee Clark's men settled for a stalemate on their travels - a sequence made up of 10 wins and nine defeats. This isn't the first time Argyle have caught our attention this term, we backed them at a big price against Charlton only a fortnight ago. They didn't quite deliver on that occasion - conceding an injury-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw - but they deserve our faith once more because any team managed by Peter Reid can be trusted to put up a feisty display when the odds are against them. Finally, the emotion of competing at this level appears to be taking some toll on Rochdale all of a sudden and Dagenham & Redbridge look a decent bet at 3.40 for the trip to Spotland. It's not so long ago that Dale were completing a six-match unbeaten run with a breathtaking 3-0 win over Huddersfield but it's a peak that's taken something out of them judging by three straight subsequent defeats at Exeter, Yeovil and Bristol Rovers. Now Daggers will be desperate to add to their misery as they go in search of their first away win at this level against a team they know well from spending the past three seasons together in the basement. John Still was unable to get the better of Keith Hill last term but he did complete a league double over him the season before. He will be well aware of Dale's deficiencies and will be looking to exploit them. The trouble for the Lancashire minnows is that supporters' expectations have increased with every step of their progress, so now rest at a level that is difficult to sustain, and it's not uncommon for such a young side to crumble in the face of such demands.
