English Npower League 2 Preview: Week 17
The League Two action starts on Friday night with Bury making the trip to the Pirelli Stadium to take on Burton.
Alan Knill's side sit in fifth after dropping out of the automatic promotion places following their first back-to-back league defeats of the season. The Shakers surprisingly lost to both Bradford and Stockport at Gigg Lane but they will be confident of getting back on track with a superb haul of 16 points out of 21 in their seven games away from home. Bury have struggled at home with teams looking to contain them but Burton will push forward from the start on Friday night and that will help the Shakers. Knill has seen his side win four games on the road in succession and that form is giving them a real chance of being promotion contenders as the campaign progresses. Burton have a good home record but they lost to Wycombe last month and could come unstuck again when they are in back in action against one of League Two's top sides. Bury are thriving in their away games so get with the 3.00 on offer for a Shakers victory. On Saturday, Bradford return to Valley Parade hoping to build on two home wins which have provided fans of the Bantams with a new burst of optimism. The 3-1 victory over Cheltenham was followed up by a crushing 5-0 success over Oxford and that has helped move Peter Taylor's men to the edge of the race for a play-off spot. Last weekend's 1-0 defeat at play-off dwellers Wycombe was a disappointment but the Chairboys only made the breakthrough late on after Bantams midfielder Tommy Doherty was dismissed. Taylor wasn't too downbeat after the game. "It's very frustrating because it was a good performance. We've still got to test their goalkeeper a little bit more but I was quite pleased with the way we played," he told the Bradford Telegraoh & Argus. Macclesfield will be buoyed by the FA Cup win over Southend on penalties in midweek but the effort expended in that success could work against them on Saturday. Aristote Nsiala and Paul Bolland are the latest Macc players to pick up injuries and could miss this game to leave Gary Simpson's injury-hit squad stretched further. The Silkmen haven't won an away game in the league since the end of September and, although they have impressed to sit in the top half of the table, they won't be helped by facing a Bradford side who looked to have turned the corner, The Bantams have the tools to continue their push up the table and won't be available at odds-against for games at Valley Parade against mid-table teams for much longer so take the 2.05 to back them for their third home win in a row. One of the games of the weekend sees promotion contenders Port Vale and Wycombe meet at Vale Park. Wycombe are experts on the road and are the only side in the division not to have lost an away game this season, albeit, because of four draws in that run, they have accumulated the same number of points as Bury from one less match. Port Vale are in the midst of an interesting run of results with four 0-0 draws in their last five League Two games. Manager Micky Adams certainly wasn't surprised after the latest scoreless clash at Northampton last weekend. "That was a story of our season," he said. "We looked very strong defensively and created chances but didn't take them." There isn't much to choose between these two sides and they will be in the promotion shake-up right until the end of the season so take the 17/2 with sportingbet and Sky Bet for the duo to cancel each other out in a goalless draw.
