English Npower League 2 Preview: Week 19
Wycombe's fantastic run on the road ended with defeat at Port Vale in their previous away game but they will be confident heading into Saturday's clash at Crewe.
The Chairboys started the season with eight unbeaten away matches in a row and that has helped keep them in the promotion mix. It has been a different story at Adams Park with Torquay the latest side to pick up three points in Buckinghamshire on November 23. Boss Gary Waddock has a handy squad at his disposal and the form of striker Scott Rendell, who bagged a double in the FA Cup victory over Chelmsford last weekend, provides a big boost ahead of the trip to Gresty Road. Crewe have only picked up three points in one home game since September 11 and boss Dario Gradi is concerned by his side's record against the top sides in League Two, "We haven't beaten teams above us and, at the moment, we probably don't look good enough to maintain a challenge," Gradi told The Sentinel. "In particular, our results against the top teams have been poor." Bury are the only side above them in the standings that the Alex have beaten this season and they have lost their last two home games to promotion contenders Rotherham and Shrewsbury. Crewe have failed to get back on track after an 11-game unbeaten run earlier in the season so support Wycombe at 2.65 with Bwinr and Betsson to bag the three points. Southend and Macclesfield couldn't be split after two matches and extra time in the first round of the FA Cup so another draw could well be on the cards when they meet in the league at Roots Hall. Macclesfield eventually reached the second round by securing a 5-3 success on penalties in the replay with Nat Brown's decisive spot-kick securing the glory. The Silkmen quickly bowed out of the tournament as they fell to a 6-0 defeat at Huddersfield last weekend but boss Gary Simpson was realistic after the match. "We couldn't really work the keeper today - that's why we're in League Two, and they're in League One pushing for promotion," he told BBC Radio Manchester. Southend have picked up two points on the road since their replay defeat and they deserve credit for both the draws secured at promotion contenders Shrewsbury and rapidly-improving Stevenage. The midweek trip to Cheltenham was postponed and, like every game in the lower leagues this weekend, that is again a possibility. However, the 3.40 for the draw is the bet if this contest does get the go ahead as both sides have already showed in the FA Cup just how evenly they are matched.
