Wednesday's English Premiership Previews, week 24
This Wednesday's Premiership games provide us four great betting opportunities. Fulham to win against Newcastle, Blackburn to surprise Tottenham, Wolves to beat Bolton and Blackpool's Charlie Adam of to score against West Ham. Good luck!
Birmingham v Manchester City
A half-time blast from Alex McLeish got the required response from Birmingham as they fought back at the weekend to beat Coventry 3-2 in the FA Cup. That was the second spiirted effort in the space of a few days after they also came from behind to beat West Ham and reach the Carling Cup final and it looks like McLeish's side are running into some form after the 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United in the league. David Bentley and Alex Hleb are showing signs of quality that has been lacking at St Andrews and the addition of Obafemi Martins should provide another useful attacking option. City have been increasingly disappointing of late and their usually miserly backline has started to concede an alarming number of goals. It is now five matches since their last clean sheet and three of those games were against lower league rivals. January signing Edin Dzeko got his first goal at Notts County and Carlos Tevez is due to make a return after a back problem but City still look vulnerable at the moment. Two of the last three meetings between these two have ended goalless but if current form means anything, that will not be the case here.
Verdict: Birmingham 2 Manchester City 2
Blackburn v Tottenham
Here's a misleading statistic for you: Tottenham have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League games. That might make you think the mood at Spurs is one of optimism, but that's not really the case. They've drawn their two league games since the 2-1 defeat at Everton and crashed to a humiliating 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Fulham at the weekend. The immediate impact of that defeat is that Michael Dawson is suspended to join Ledley King and Younes Kaboul on the list of defensive absentees. With William Gallas also struggling with a hip injury, Spurs may be forced to partner Sebastian Bassong - woeful at Fulham - with Jonathan Woodgate, who hasn't started a Premier League game in 14 months. With key men Gareth Bale and Tom Huddlestone still out and confidence low, Spurs look there for the taking against a Blackburn side with victories in six of their last eight home games. Get on the hosts at Bet365s standout 23/10.
Verdict: Blackburn 2 Tottenham 1
Blackpool v West Ham
It was a decent transfer window in the end for Blackpool, who have made a couple of canny-looking acquisitions but - most importantly - retained the services of talisman Charlie Adam. The Tangerines' playmaker has been superb this season and spent much of January being courted by Liverpool and, right at the last moment, Tottenham. No move materialised, though, and Adam was quick to declare his commitment to Blackpool on Monday night. Certainly there's no sense that the fans have turned against their skipper, and Adam will be keen to let his feet do the talking at the earliest opportunity. A home clash with struggling West Ham looks as good a chance as any. Adam takes the penalties at Bloomfield Road and has netted five times this season. It's worth noting that three of those have been the opening goal of the game, so an each-way first goalscorer play at Blue Square's 8/1 is the bet here.
Verdict: Blackpool 2 West Ham 0
Bolton v Wolves
Bolton let us down against Wigan in the FA Cup at the weekend and a current lack of goals is proving problematic for the Trotters after a third straight game when they failed to trouble the scorer. Owen Coyle is not particularly concerned though as his side continue to create chances and the late deal on deadline day to land Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea should add some impetus up front. Wolves are probably playing better than their league position suggests but their inability with their final pass also led an FA Cup exit against Stoke at the weekend. Throw in a missed penalty as well and that is uccessive home defeats for Mick McCarthy and his side. However, they don't look a forlorn hope here to bounce back at 15/4 with Victor Chandler. They defended well into the final period of the game and they won't have to deal with an direct aerial bombardment from Coyle's outfit. They have also shown the ability to pinch a goal too and and that is what this game may just come down to. The pair met at Molineux back in November with Bolton winning by the odd goal in five - a repeat of that looks unlikely and the vote goes to a narrow away success.
Verdict: Bolton 0 Wolves 1
Fulham v Newcastle
Mark Hughes is starting to put his stamp on this Fulham team now and the 4-0 romp against Tottenham in the FA Cup at the weekend was a huge shot of confidence which shows how well things are moving in the right direction. Hughes always thought that his side would be better in the second half of the campaign and with players like Moussa Dembele and Andy Johnson working their way back to fitness and the arrival of Steve Sidwell, the energy and dynamism he wants to see from his side is becoming more and more obvious. They look worth a bet at 11/10 to see off a Newcastle side that lost Andy Carroll on Monday to Liverpool but did swell the coffers to the tune of around £35 million. The feeling is not one of too much doom and gloom on Tyneside as that is a fair return for any player these days although it will be interesting to see who Alan Pardew pencils in as his long-term replacement. Consolodation will be Newcastle's aim from now until the end of the season and with 30 points so far, they are well on the way to achieving their aim of Premier League survival. They are unbeaten in their last four league games but it is the home side who appeal in current mood.
Verdict Fulham 2 Newcastle 0
Liverpool v Stoke
All eyes will be on Anfield on Wednesday night as Liverpool embark on the post-Torres era. And while £35million man Andy Carroll is still out with a thigh injury, fellow new boy Luis Suarez should make his debut. He's a best price of 9/2 with Sky Bet to open the scoring, but it looks wise to wait to see how he settles into life in England. Despite Suarez's undoubted quality, players with stunning scoring records in the Dutch Eredivisie don't have an unblemished record when it comes to backing that up in the tougher environment of the Premier League. Despite all the optimism surrounding Liverpool at the moment, the loss of Torres and Carroll's injury mean the Reds go up against a tough, well-drilled Stoke side without a proven Premier League frontman. Looks one to swerve from a punting perspective.
Verdict: Liverpool 1 Stoke 1
